In a bid to promote the ambitious objective of a self-reliant India or the Aatmanirbhar Bharat, the government on its procurement portal GeM has made it mandatory for sellers and suppliers to mention the country of origin of the products they wish to sell.
GeM or the one-stop Government e-Market Place is a dynamic, self-sustaining, and user-friendly online portal where user goods and services can be procured by the Government officers.
This step is also in accordance to push the Make in India cause of the government and aims to fulfill the ambition of reducing the foreign dependence of the country for its need and to provide the local manufacturers a much-needed boost in this situation of an economic depression.
The CEO of the portal Talleen Kumar said that GeM has made it mandatory for sellers to enter the country of origin while registering all the new products. Sellers who have already uploaded their products are being reminded regularly to update the information failing which the product will be entitled to removal.
He also added that a provision for an indication of the percentage of local content in products has been enabled with a view to promoting the Make In India cause.
