India to have its first Covid-19 vaccine within the next 73 days

India is expected to commercialise its first Covid-19 vaccine within the next 73 days. The vaccine named ‘Covishield’ developed by the Oxford University- AstraZeneca is currently is in its third phase of trials in Pune, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The vaccine will be produced by the Serum Institute of India for which it has got a ‘special manufacturing priority license’ from the government of India. As per reports the central government will be procuring 68 crore doses by June 2021 in order to immunise for free under National Immunisation Programme (NIP). Along with this two other vaccines Covaxine and ZyCoV-D are in for the run to be country’s first Covid-19 vaccine and currently are in first and second phase of human clinical trials simultaneously.
