Kunal Deshmukh, the final year student in the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Science of, IIT Bombay, and Kritti Sharma, the third-year undergraduate student in Department of Mechanical Engineering of IIT Bombay, recently researched about the closest asteroids. Both the students were working on a research project to look for the near-earth asteroids. In this research they came across a space rock, which was identified by using the data from the robotic Zwicky Transient Facility, California. This car-sized asteroid, 2020 QG which remained unnoticed by NASA, flew 2,950 km above the earth’s surface and was identified by these two students. The adviser of the students, Varun Bhalerao complimented their hard word and dedication expressing his happiness for the achievement.
